Our approach is built on three pillars:
Skills · Strength · Mindset

Technical development that transfers to real game situations. This is done at our synthetic ice facility in Port Coquitlam as well as private and semi-private on-ice sessions.

Age-appropriate athletic development for balance, speed, agility and durability. With a focus on functional strength and injury prevention.

Confidence, focus, responsibility, and resilience under pressure. Integrated into our Mental Edge framework.

Many young athletes train hard, attend camps, and work with different coaches, yet still feel inconsistent or unsure what to focus on next.
Not because they aren’t capable.
But because no one has shown them a clear development path.
Without direction, training becomes guesswork.
And guesswork slows progress.

The Hockey Lab Development Path is how athlete development works at The Hockey Lab.
It replaces random sessions with:
This is not a program that athletes “complete.”
It’s a path they grow along as skills, confidence, and responsibility develop over time.

Athletes train on the Development Path through monthly mentorship-based memberships.
Why memberships?
Because real development requires:
One-off sessions can introduce our approach.
They are not how athletes develop long-term.

At The Hockey Lab, development doesn’t happen in isolation
Athletes train together, push each other, and stay accountable to a higher standard
As part of the Lab, athletes gain access to:
This is where athletes stay engaged, build confidence, and continue progressing over time

Grant Truesdell is a lifelong athlete, competitive hockey goalie, and founder of The Hockey Lab. With over 30 years of experience playing and coaching the position, Grant understands the technical, physical, and mental demands goalies face at every stage of development.
As a goalie and athlete, Grant competed in high-pressure environments where confidence, focus, and composure mattered as much as skill. That experience now shapes his coaching philosophy: development must be intentional, structured, and guided over time.
Outside of hockey, Grant is also an internationally touring musician and Juno Award winner, performing at the highest levels where preparation, mindset, and execution under pressure are non-negotiable. This unique background gives him a deep understanding of how athletes perform when expectations are high and mistakes are amplified.
Grant is also the creator of The Mental Edge, a mindset training system integrated into The Hockey Lab Development Path to help athletes build consistency, emotional control, and confidence in competition.
Above all, Grant believes great coaching is about clarity, trust, and long-term growth. He works closely with athletes and parents to provide clear development plans, honest feedback, and consistent support throughout the season.
